The city first came to rise during Sahib al-Zanj’s reign which took over Basra and made Abu Al-Khaseeb the capital city due to its strategic location. He built a city to the west which he called Al-Mukhtarah and built around high walls, deep trenches, and rough roads. In 270 Hijri Abu Al-Khaseeb was raided and freed from Sahib al-Zanj. In 140 Hijri one of the Abbasid caliphs named Marzouk Al-Khaseeb dug a river, which was later named after him, then the whole area was named after him.
