At Tannumah city is located in the east of Basra, on the southern side of Iraq. It is the center of Shatt Al-Arab district that extends from the north all the way to the monastery where Al-Qurna District boundaries start, and to the south where Shalamecheh district is near the Iranian borders. Shatt Al-Arab district is one of seven districts in Basra Governorate. It is connected by two bridges and Iran-Iraq border crossing. The city is 16 km away from the Iran-Iraq border. Additionally, the city has a number of villages on the north side such as Kardalan, Hassan river, big and small Al kabsi, Al zuraiji, Al Hota, Al Fayiha, and Kutayban. Historical Background of At Tannumah City

There are many stories behind the name of the city. One of them is that there was a woman called “Numah”; she used to live on a hill where she  sold things like toys and traditional dishes. As the years passed the hill was known as “Tannumah” which means “ The Hill of Numah” – a combination of her name “ Numah” and “Tal”. Later on the name was also shortened and assimilated to become what is today known as At Tannumah. Another story says that the city was named after a plant that is used as a hair dye called “Chrozophora”; “ Tanum” in Arabic.
