Kufa is one of the oldest cities in Iraq and is 170km away from the capital city Baghdad. Both Kufa and Najaf cities are considered one area is known as Najaf Governorate. In addition to Kufa, Samarra, Karbala, Al-Kadhimiya, and Najaf, are the five holy cities for Shi’a.

The name Kufa refers to (gathering in one place). The city was also once called Kufani, which means (mounds of sand). Additionally, Kufa means a place with gravel soil. It is also used to serve military bases. Some say Kufa is an Arabic name, others say it’s Syriac.

Historical Background of Kufa City

The city was founded by The Companion of the Prophet Saʻd ibn Abi Waqqas ,during Umar ibn Al-Khattab’s era in 17 Hijri/638 CE, to serve as a military base for Muslims, due to its strategic location. Later, Ali ibn Abu Talib chose Kufa as the capital city, for it to be the political center in the Islamic world; many people traveled to it to study, which led to the expansion of the city and gaining much importance. The Abbasids also made Kufa their capital. During that time, the city witnessed many political, historical, and cultural events. In Uthman’s era Kufa city became a part of Najaf districts and became a center for science and literature. In 1900 a bridge was built over the Euphrates, then a cable-stayed lightning protection was installed from Hillah area to Kufa, a while later, a large store was built, a traditional market was founded and many rental rooms for tourists back then. A few years later the Tram between Kufa and Najaf was established.
