The fort was built in the first half of the 19th century, specifically in the second half of the 13th Hijri century, and underwent significant renovations during the reign of Imam Azan bin Qais Al-Busaidi between 1285-1288 AH (1871 AD). In 1993, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture restored it, and it was opened to the public in 1994.

The uses of these rooms vary greatly, adding historical depth to the landmark. The fort has four towers located at its four corners: the northeastern tower, the southwestern tower, the northwestern tower, and the southeastern tower.
Each pair of towers shares architectural features and decorations, with slight differences; the northwestern tower resembles the southeastern tower, while the northeastern tower shares similarities with the southwestern tower.
